Question: Why do I flare at the same time of the year?

My colitis always seems to flare in the spring every year. It’s happened three years in a row. Why is that?

Answer

It has been suggested that certain times of the year are bad for Crohn’s-related flare-ups. Although research on this particular subject has not been consistent or conclusive, there is data to suggest that stress may trigger flare-ups; therefore if people are stressed at specific times of the year – say the end of a corporate quarter – they may be at increased risk of flaring up. Additionally, certain data suggests that infections of the bowel can trigger flare-ups; so during periods when specific infections commonly occur, one may be at increased risk of flaring up.
