Question: Taking Probiotics

Supposedly taking a probiotic is helpful for UC... but the one I am taking is very expensive. My question is do you know how long I should be taking a probiotic for? Is it only for a certain amount of time or forever? I have also made changes to my diet, adding in sauerkraut and yogurt.

Secondly, is it practical to take a probiotic while you are still on medication? Or is it something you should do when you are in remission, or does it matter?

Thanks!

Answer

Very few probiotics have been studied for treating UC. The vast majority have no evidence to support their use for UC. The one with reasonable evidence is VSL3. If no improvement has been seen after 2 months, then stop. If improvement is seen, then continuing long term makes sense.

Whether continuing probiotics is safe with medications is a question that should be asked to your treating Gastroenterologist.

I hope this helps!
