Question: Is it possible to have IBS along with either Crohn's or Ulcerative Colitis or both?

Is it possible to have IBS along with either Crohn's or Ulcerative Colitis or both? I'm currently in clinical remission but I also notice that I get extreme amounts of mucus. I've tried searching all over the Internet and some articles say no while others say it's possible to have low grade inflammation that might not show up on regular testing but can mimic IBS symptoms.

Answer

Yes it is possible. In fact, IBS is more likely to occur in a patient with ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease. This known association is why it is sometimes difficult to determine the cause of a patient's symptoms (since IBS or IBD can have very similar symptoms).
