Question: Crohn's and Celiac

I've had Crohn's for 40 years, basically my whole life. I've just recently been diagnosed with Celiac as well. Is it common for Crohn's patients to also be Celiac and if so, how does one affect the other? Also, is it likely that I have always had Celiac but it was missed due to the focus on my Crohn's? I've had surgery for Crohn's several times...would the surgeon have noticed the Celiac (flattened villi) if I had it at the time?

Answer

Patients with IBD are at an increased risk of Celiac disease. Celiac disease is diagnosed by examining biopsies (tissue samples) taken from the duodenum, so a surgeon would not have seen this problem at the time of surgery.
