Question: Possible to have Crohn's and ulcerative colitis?

There are many IBD support sites on Facebook. One woman is stating that no one can have both Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. I know someone who was diagnosed with both and there are several people on these sites that say they have been diagnosed with both. Please clarify, is it possible to carry both a diagnosis of Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis?

Great question. A person cannot have both Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Some confusion may exist because Crohn's disease that is limited to just the colon is often referred to as Crohn's colitis. That is not considered ulcerative colitis though.

There are important differences between Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, such as location and characteristics of the inflammation. You can read more about it here: https://www.trustedtherapies.com/articles/3-what-is-crohn-s-disease
