Question: Some studies suggest that long term use of Azathioprine may cause birth defects and lower male fertility. Is this true for males?

After 15 years of my husband being on Azathioprine, I want to start a family and would like to separate fact from fiction.

Answer

The overall data for azathioprine in pregnancy is that it is safe. The challenge about reports concerning birth defects with drugs is not knowing how much a drug contributes to this result as opposed to the chance it would have happened anyways.

Regarding azathrioprine lowering male fertility, there isn't data to support that association.
